Almost from the very moment he stepped onto the ice as a rookie in 2007-08, Bobby Ryan has been one of the hardest players to go up against in the NHL.
His combination of raw skill, size and ferocity is something the Red Wings know all to well, as Ryan played for the Anaheim Ducks for six seasons, including playoff tilts.
Ryan, a left wing, is 26 years old, 6’2″ and 200 pounds, and pops in 30+ goals a year like routine. He’s gritty and difficult to take off the puck, to say the very least.
So the Red Wings were probably glad to be rid of Ryan when the team moved to the Eastern Conference after last season.
He’s baaaack!
Ryan was traded by the Ducks to Ottawa in July, for forwards Jakob Silfverberg, Stefan Noesen and a 1st round pick in the 2014 Entry Draft.
He’s picking up where he left off with Anaheim, having scored 10 goals and adding 10 assists for 20 points in 22 games for the Senators this season. Three of his markers have come on the power play.
Ryan’s trade to Ottawa was a sort of shocker in the NHL, but so far he has adapted well to life as a Senator.
Ryan, heading into tonight’s game at Detroit, has played in exactly 400 regular season NHL games—about five full seasons’ worth—and has scored 157 goals, which is 31 per 80 games. And he was Mr. Consistency with the Ducks, scoring 31, 35, 34 and 31 goals in his first four full seasons in the NHL.
The Red Wings figured not to see much of Bobby Ryan after they moved to the East. But Ryan has followed them over. The Red Wings are probably thrilled—not.
